Unity of Eritrea required a centralized crowdfunding platform where individuals and teams could create fundraising campaigns and receive donations from supporters worldwide. The platform needed to provide campaign creators with tools to manage campaigns and donations while giving administrators control over campaign verification and fund distribution. To improve transparency and trust, blockchain technology was introduced to record important donation and fund-related activities in a tamper-evident manner.

Challenge

The blockchain implementation focused on improving transparency and traceability within the existing crowdfunding platform.

Some of the Key challenges of the project were:
  • Donation records were primarily maintained within the centralized application database, making independent verification difficult.
  • Supporters needed greater transparency regarding when donations were received and how campaign funds were tracked.
  • Important donation and fund-related activities needed a tamper-evident record.
  • The platform needed to maintain donor and campaign privacy while using blockchain technology.
  • The blockchain solution needed to work with the existing crowdfunding platform without replacing the current database and payment workflow.
  • Blockchain transactions needed to be handled reliably when network or transaction failures occurred.
  • The solution needed to support a large number of donation transactions without making every application operation dependent on blockchain confirmation.
Solutions 
  • Integrated a blockchain layer with the existing crowdfunding platform using Web3.js / ethers.js.
  • Developed Solidity smart contracts to record important campaign and donation transactions.
  • Recorded key donation information such as campaign ID, donation reference, amount/reference value, transaction type, and timestamp on the blockchain.
  • Generated a unique hash for important donation records and stored the hash on the blockchain for verification.
  • Added blockchain transaction tracking so each blockchain-based donation record could be associated with its transaction ID.
  • Implemented a donation verification mechanism that allows authorized users to verify whether a donation record matches the blockchain record.
  • Added blockchain tracking for important campaign events such as campaign activation, donation received, campaign completion, and fund distribution.
  • Kept sensitive donor information, payment details, and personal information in the existing secure database rather than storing them directly on the blockchain.
  • Integrated blockchain transactions with the existing donation workflow so users could continue using the existing platform without major changes.
  • Added transaction status handling for pending, confirmed, and failed blockchain transactions.
  • Implemented retry and error-handling mechanisms for blockchain transactions affected by temporary network failures.
  • Added blockchain transaction information to campaign and donation history to improve transparency.

  • Added a blockchain-based transparency layer to the existing crowdfunding platform.
